PDFs
How Do Values Work?
This PDF explains what values are and why they are important, as well as how they impact behaviour and relationships. Values underpin a lot of beliefs and attitudes, and can often be a source of conflict. Understanding how they work will enable you to tap into a person’s motivation and lead them more effectively.

Making Values Work
In this PDF you will discover techniques and suggested phrases to help you use values in various situations. This builds on the information covered in ‘How Do Values Work?’, in which the nature of values is explained.

Constructive Disagreement
Disagreement is an unavoidable part of working with others. Unless it is handled carefully, or the relationship is quite robust, disagreement can erode trust and compromise effectiveness, and can, in extreme cases, lead to broken relationships that have a knock-on negative impact on the business. This PDF outlines a technique whereby you can disagree with someone in a way that keeps them engaged, supports the relationship, and leads to a more productive outcome.

ON THE JOB ACTIONS
Ethical Standards
Take time to find out about guidelines covering confidentiality of information and standards, policies, and procedures affecting your work. Discuss what standards are expected with colleagues.

Organisation’s Values
Think about what the organisation’s values mean to you, and how you can demonstrate them in your daily actions. Remember the way you work has a direct impact on others.

No Blaming!
Looking to blame others is an instinct; acknowledge this. Wait before responding; talk the situation through objectively and calmly with a colleague. Work at taking an objective and collaborative approach as you will more likely achieve your long-term outcomes when you do. This might be easier if you can identify your own values and act in accordance with your ‘better self’.

Values
Read and/or watch 'How Do Values Work?' and 'Making Values Work' so you can recognise how fundamental they are to your ethics. Get in the habit of asking “What’s important to me about this?” Then pay attention to what people tell you or show about their values.

Governance
Review how the governance around your activities can be altered to highlight the importance of cooperation. For example, avoid reviews that focus just on problems and blame and include successes and praise.

Handling Disagreements

Read 'Constructive Disagreement' and practise the technique if you need to disagree with someone, want to maintain your integrity, and want to act in a balanced way, which is by its nature an ethical approach.
