The behaviours in the table below show how you can demonstrate the skill of Helping Others Through Change at each of the competency levels in which it appears. Click on the plus sign to show the behaviours at that level.
Level 2
- Seeks to understand the impact of change on others, recognising that people are motivated differently.
- Explains change clearly and positively, selling the benefits, and staying calm and reassuring when others are uncomfortable, getting practical support for them.
Level 3
- Plans the communication of change, considering different motivations and emotional reactions; helps to remove concerns by explaining what is different and what is staying the same.

Learn how to recognise and find out your own and others’ values and build them into how you understand yourself, how you understand and approach others, and how they enable you to motivate, lead and manage more effectively.
Making Values Work
This video builds on the information covered in ‘How Do Values Work?’, in which the nature of values is explained. In this video you will discover techniques, questions to ask, and suggested phrases to help you use values in various situations such as influencing and handling conflict.

ON THE JOB ACTIONS
Information
Ensure you find out and fully understand the business reasons and benefits for the change. Think about the benefits of change and ensure that you can explain these clearly to others including the effect on objectives and roles. Read and/or watch Managing Complex Information for a technique of logically assembling information to help others see the situation clearly.
Identify the motivators for others and communicate the implications of change for them using empathy. Read and/or watch The Power of Empathy. Look for the positive implications as a basis for presenting the information on the change. Tailor your communication to the individuals’ motivation and adjust your approach in the light of the responses you get. Recognise the stages people pass through, denial, resistance, exploration and finally commitment. Intervene appropriately to help them. Recognise the stages in yourself.
